How to Find the Ideal Architect

Some useful things to know before you contact us.

We will share several little secrets with you, which we hope will assist you in choosing your future architect. These services are part of our field. That's why we’re not a construction company, but prefer to design a building first, and then help you find suitable suppliers. There are construction firms who, on the contrary, provide you with their architect. On the market, they behave like an architects’ office, but logically it is clear that the aim of their business is to make a profit from the construction of the building, and architectural services are sub-contracted. We have found the most effective working method to be the first model, where we first design a building and then we help you find suitable suppliers. We do not wish to be in conflict with ourselves.

How Much Does an Architect Cost?

The costs of services vary within the field. Basically however, they are at three levels. The lowest costs are offered by individuals or groups working freelance. Middle-sized studios are more expensive, but they also offer an entirely different approach to the work, with a much greater degree of experience than a one man show offers. The most expensive services, relating to great accomplishment, extensive experience and more often than not a strong lobby, are offered by well-established big companies connected to famous names in architecture. Free Architects is now a medium-sized studio which has developed naturally from the original, very small studio. Our prices correspond to our size and the extent of our experience. We set them on the basis of statistics from previous projects and the firm's hourly rates, never as a percentage of the volume of investment . This is a more exact and flexible method. Our own Lucie will be happy to answer any other questions you may have regarding the price levels of Free Architects.

How Does an Architect Work?

Each of us works completely differently. It depends on the architect’s age, experience personality, year of birth and the size of the company in which he/she works. Clear instructions and a concrete plan of how the design process will work are essential. Similar taste or smooth harmony with the architect is always an advantage for cooperation. The design process is a long road, full of technical as well as social pitfalls. It's a process built on synergy, courage and critical thinking, and never on conflict. If the architect does not make a good impression on you as far as his/her personality is concerned, no-one on this Earth will be able to persuade you of his/her professionalism. At the same time, avoid too friendly a relationship, as it can damage the professional one. We have managed to put together a varied team of individuals, and Free Architects can therefore provide the client with a wide range of choice of houses in period styles from the Romantic to the Industrial, or  Minimalist and Abstract styles. Just as a filmmaker enjoys making films of different  genres, so we enjoy designing houses and their interiors in a variety of styles.  Free Architects has never been and will never be a company with one, single approach.

Who Becomes a Famous Architect?

Someone always stands out at the top of the pile, and history tells us which buildings have enjoyed success in our country. Fame in the field of architecture is distinct from fame in television showbiz. It is directly reliant on the liberality of investors and the degree of economic development in society as a whole. Then all you need is recognition in the academic field, extensive public interest in your work, an excellent professional name, and you're there. Obviously, this cannot all be achieved two years after graduation. We know with certainty that a great architect’s reputation goes before him. His achievement is reached step by step, over a long period. We would always recommend to the client to: “Look for an architect who will have a compatible relationship with the scale and sense of the commission. The Rolling Stones won't come and play at just anyone's birthday party, and Mies Van der Rohe did not became famous from building villas in Brno alone.”
